Psychological Testing

Why should I get tested? - You do not need to have a “problem” to be referred for testing.  Psychologists test adults and children with wide ranges of complaints or simply for the purposes of educating them on how their minds work and what their interests are.  For example, you may wish to be tested for career fit, or you may wish to have your child tested for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

There are several things that testing can show:

·        Mental ability
·        Psychological Adaptivity
·        Emotional Regulation
·        Personality Styles
·        Learning Disorders
·        Career Fit
·        Relational Compatibility/Satisfaction

The combination of a clinical interview with psychologists and the appropriate testing can provide you with fast and reliable information about yourself.  We offer comprehensive testing to explore all of these domains, or specific tests to specifically look at one or two.

Mental Ability  - Testing mental ability gets at your problem-solving ability, your mental processing speed, and the overall style in which your brain works, including strengths and weaknesses.

Psychological Adaptivity - Testing your psychological adaptivity will show you where you stand with regard to your psychological development.  You will gain understanding about why you behave and feel the way you do in certain situations.

Emotional Regulation - Testing your emotional regulation will provide you with information about how you cope with general life stressors (internal and external).  You will see areas in which you excel as well as areas in which you need some work.

Personality Styles - Testing your personality style will provide you with information on how you perceive events/relationships, how you perceive yourself in relation to these events/relationships, and how you are likely to think, feel, and behave.  You will also learn about your personality assets as well as any personality liabilities.

Learning Disorders - Testing for learning disorders includes testing for organic (i.e., biologically based) problems that might hinder your motivation, concentration or attention.  It is important to test for learning disorders as early as possible for children so they can receive the best education to fit their learning style.

Career Fit - Testing your career fit will assess your personality style as it relates to different occupations.  You will be provided a list of possible career choices based on your interests as well as your interpersonal relating style.

Relational Compatibility/Satisfaction - Testing your relationship compatibility and/or satisfaction will provide you with information on problem areas in your relationship.  It will also provide you with information about what works for you in relational situations.

Time Commitment - After the initial interview, testing can take from 1-4 hours, depending on how many tests are given.  Frequently this time can be broken into 2 or 3 different sessions if scheduling necessitates doing so.  We administer each test, score them, and then meet with the client to discuss the results.  We consider all the information to gain a complete and comprehensive understanding of each unique individual.  The overall testing process can take 2 to 4 weeks.

Benefits - After testing, you will have a greater understanding of your learning ability, your personality style, emotional state, mental ability, and your interests.

Testing can greatly simplify life by answering long-unanswered questions, by pointing out unknown problem areas, and by making sense out of the complex inner workings of the mind and the body.
